Where a space uses amplified communication, accessibility obligations may also apply to it. Whether they do depends on the building classification, the use of the space and the scope of work — which is why it is worth establishing at design stage rather than after installation.

Sound-field amplification improves what everyone in the room hears through loudspeakers. Hearing augmentation delivers the signal directly to a listener's hearing device or receiver. They solve different problems, and a room can need both.

Each state sets out how school facilities are to be designed and delivered — EFSG in NSW, DSDEF in Queensland and Department of Education guidelines in WA and SA, while universities apply their own AV standards; NCC and DDA considerations sit across the building and its accessibility. Addressing them together at design stage avoids a system that satisfies one and not the other.
